چکیده

The third tone sandhi in Mandarin is a well-studied rule, where a Tone 3 followed by another Tone 3 is changed as a rising tone, similar to Tone 2. This Tone 3 sandhi rule is straightforward in disyllabic words, which is phonetically driven for the ease of production. In three or more than three syllables with Tone 3, however, the Tone 3 sandhi application is more complicated and involves both the prosodic and morph-syntactic domains, which makes it difficult for L2 learners. This study aims to understand how L2 learners with another tone language experience could master the Mandarin Tone 3 sandhi rule. Specifically, the study investigates the production of Tone 3 sandhi in trisyllabic Mandarin words by Cantonese speakers. In the current study, 30 Cantonese speakers were requested to produce 15 trisyllabic words (“1+[2+3]” and “[1+2]+3” sandhi patterns) and 5 hexasyllabic sentences with Tone 3 in sequences. The analyses of results center on three major types of error patterns: overgeneralization, under application, and combination. The findings are discussed with regard to the phono-syntactic interactions of Tone 3 sandhi at the lexical and phrasal levels as well as the influence of the Cantonese tonal system.

Mechanisms of Tone Sandhi Rule Application by Non-Native Speakers

This study is the first to examine acquisition of two Mandarin tone sandhi rules by Cantonese speakers. It designs both real and different types of wug words to test whether learners may exploit a lexical or computation mechanism in tone sandhi rule application. We also statistically compared their speech production with Beijing Mandarin speakers. The results of functional data analysis showed ...

Trisyllabic Tone Sandhi in Tianjin Mandarin

Tianjin Mandarin is known for its complex tone sandhi patterns over bisyllabic constituents and the conflicting directionality as well as the possible iterative application of sandhi rules over trisyllabic constituents. Previous studies on Tianjin tone sandhi, especially those on sandhi in trisyllabic sequences, have been mainly based on impressionistic descriptions. In this paper, we argue tha...

Prosodic grouping in Chinese trisyllabic structures by multiple cues – tone coarticulation, tone sandhi and consonant lenition

Traditionally, the prosodic domain as has been called ‘foot’ in Mandarin Chinese is considered to be derivable from the application of Tone 3 sandhi rule. This study investigated the internal prosodic grouping of Chinese trisyllabic structures by examining multiple cues in parallel – tone coarticulation, tone sandhi application and consonant lenition. Analyses by tone coarticulation and consona...

Production of lexical tones by Southern Min-Mandarin bilinguals

This is a preliminary study examining the tonal production of L1 Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM) speakers who are also fluent in Mandarin. Both languages have tone sandhi rules in which certain lexical tones are neutralized in non-XP-final positions. Disyllabic Mandarin and TSM words with different tonal combinations in frame sentences were examined. The results suggest that Mandarin Tone 1, Tone ...

Topics in Tone 3 Sandhi

Although Chen’s [1] Minimal Rhythmic Units analysis and Duanmu’s [2] Metrical Feet analysis can effectively account for a wide range of Tone 3 Sandhi (T3S) phenomena in Mandarin Chinese, the T3S patterns of sentences with a Topic phrase (TP sentences) were not discussed in their works. Therefore, this study intends to critically examine the power of prediction of those analyses by analyzing the...
